The first option is ''‘Hide 0s in effect columns’''. This is simply to reduce visual clutter and make it obvious when an effect command is actually present. This is how older trackers used to display effects columns, so if you're used to this style you may feel more at home with this disabled.

This can be an aesthetic preference, but it's also be extremely useful for composing music across patterns, such as when using polyrhythms.
