Page editing / constructing
All the pages are password protected, why?
Because spammers force us to do so. I’m sorry, there is no other option, if they keep continue using deeper methods; A captcha system will be installed to get rid of the full problem.
What are the passwords?
In general the password to edit is just “edit” (without quotes) and for uploading images or audio related content “upload”.
This counts for the User Contribution pages but also for the Profile pages. If a password doesn’t work out, you probably attempt to edit a page in a group that isn’t publically open. (Such as Main or Renoise).
Are passwords going to be changed regulary?
No, but if spammers seem to find this wiki important enough to write a seperate script for it to automatically submit the default passwords, a captcha system shall be installed instead. We’re not going to raise doorsteps until the very end.
Older revisions can be restored? How?
If you notice a tutorial or document that has been vandalised, you can click the page history and then browse through the changes made throughout the past. The most recent change that looks alright can then be restored by clicking it’s related “restore” link.If some site elements are being vandalised too much, I will lock ‘m myself. If vandalism keeps coming from certain fixed ip-adresses, they will be banned. And if obscure material is being provided, the registered ip will be looked up and if nesessary handed over to the proper authorities (examples regarding explicit violence and childporn).
Why are some site elements completely locked? (default password doesn’t work)
Because some site elements do not need to be altered. However, if you want to become a site-moderator, drop a message on the boards and i may give you the passwords to alter certain parts of the site.
I’ve edited a page but i don’t like others to mangle with it, is it possible to protect the page in some way?
Yes you can, just click on the link of your page to make the URL visible in your browser text-line, then add ?action=attr behind it and set the “edit password” to your needs. For the essense of this site, don’t password protect your article if you do not really require this. And if you really find this nessesary, best is to give users a reference to somehow reply to your pages by adding a sort of request for comment link from within your page so users can edit this commentary page.
Can i password-protect all my pages the same way i can protecting a single page?
If you create a new group and set a group password in the group attributes, you can, but once more, this site is there to be enhancable by everyone who can give some good input. If you really have the opinion that some pages should be protected, just protect those few pages. By protecting everything you post, you pull down the essense of this site.
Creating a new group, intresting, how?
The common group you currently post into is called Renoise and articles you add into the links are automaticly linked to Renoise by references as UC/MyArticle. But if you want to post articles that are instantly linked to your name for example, create a link like MyName/MyArticle, or MyName.MyArticle on the index list and then after submitting, click the question-mark link behind your addition to edit the page. Once your article is submitted, the group has been created if it did not existed yet, or your article has been added to that group if it already did existed. Also any file uploads you do for pages in specific groups, will end up in the group folder the page is linked to.
I’ve noticed flaws or missing info on a certain page, but i can’t edit it, can i have the edit password?
Ask the author, most Renoise related material *should* be editable, if it is not, someone set a password on it. I’ll check on regular basis if public pages are password locked and i’ll unlock ‘m when they are. password protected pages linked directly from the user-contribution pages i do not touch. Ask the author to apply the change you want, or let him clear the password temporary for you.
Can i add new pages myself?
Yes, if the page does not exist you can create it by setting the new name of the page behind a group: http://tutorials.renoise.com/index.php/UC/NewPageName?action=edit. Once added it will be included in the search index, though there won’t be a link to it on the Side-bar Tutorial Index. The best thing is to add it on the User contributions index first, either using a WikiWord or a freelink and then submitting the page, followed by clicking the question mark. Once you’ve edited and submitted that page, the link will be fully listed on the subpage of the User contributions list.
I can’t edit the User contributions page… What’s the password?
Just click any of the links on that page related to your topic and try to edit that page.
What should i post upon new pages?
Anything involving tips, tricks and troubleshooting or anything else related to Renoise you think that might be very handy to post; Would be lovely if you would add related pictures with it and it would even be lovely if you add a solution with it, if it involves a problem. For chit chat and discussions i rather would refer you to the community
What about page styles and colours and formatting and how do i open links in a new window for example?
That is more than one question. But pick a couple of links to read in the *Intermediate editing topics* part of the pmWiki documentation. Those pages give you a clear answer upon most of your questions.
I did everything you advised, but i can’t upload my page or edit a page, the password is wrong!
I doubt the password is wrong, but you may be using an open proxy or your ip falls inside a domain that is blacklisted on this site. If that’s the case i could only suggest you to use a different proxy server or turn it off and try it again. If it doesn’t work out you can always send the suggested change to vvoois -a=t. renoise d#o!t com and i’ll post the change for you. I guess it will be a rare situation if that may happen.
Uploading
Can i upload pictures?
Yes you can upload files to 512K (524288 Bytes) in size.
What kind of files am i allowed to upload?
There are a couple of extensions allowed for uploading so whatever you can squeeze in these 512000 bytes you may upload as:

And how where do i upload?
By simply adding a Attach:myfile.ext on the spot where you want to have the file available for download and then secondly after submitting the page, clicking upon the question mark so you will get the upload form to upload the file to. Neat huh? For browser compatible images use the Img:myimage.png tag instead.
And what’s the password again?
The default password is just “upload”, and wherever the area is restricted, the password will not work ofcourse.
And what if i post explicit pictures / movies of my wife?
Well, wether your wife will be happy with it is up to your own risk, if i notice them or someone notices me about it, i will remove them, just count on the fact that violent, gore and explicit material is being removed as quickly as noticed and when posted objects fall below non-tolerance level (e.g. childporn) the logged data is being handed over your local authorities. Just keep the material *On Topic* and it will stay here.
Aren’t you afraid someone will post viruses or other plague-material on your site?
Nah, I don’t worry about that, this site is running on a Linux box which does not even have many daemon processes running except this webdeamon and when i manually enable it, an FTP daemon. And as for being afraid that visitors will be infected with uploaded virus material:See accepted file-extensions answer. Some dork may attach a myvirusfile.mp3.exe to an email, to fool the average outlook express dummy, but my upload script cannot be fooled this easily. A virus cloaked with any of the above mentioned extensions cannot do any harm from within a webbrowser as long as the webbrowser interprets the file it supposed to interpret. Once more:keep the material *On Topic*….
Ahh… but your server can’t block links to external files can it?
Hmmz, it can, but currently it won’t, simply because i can’t easily check wether external files contain virusses or are designed to harm your pc, so please do be carefull when downloading files that are being posted in topics here. Specially when someone vandalized the page to have his virus being spread this way. But we do keep track of who posted what, including ip addresses so if there is someone getting any ideas, do not feel welcome to test them here!
I posted the picture but it still shows me the question mark.
Because you probably ordered it to give it a different name in the “Name attachment as” field than you supplied in the Attach-rule. And once they don’t match anymore, your image won’t being displayed. Please don’t reupload the same image to this site but adjust the name of your attach reference properly thank you very much. It is the purpose to leave the proposed name in the “Name attachment as” field the way you typed it in the attach-reference.
I want to change my file but it refuses to do so.
Overwriting files is not allowed, if you want to change an existing file you uploaded, post a message on the boards and the link to the page and the file you want to replace and i’ll remove the file for you. If you did not uploaded the file yourself, you’ll have to ask the original file-poster to give me the personal permission.
What do you do with unreferenced files? meaning files which are uploaded but not linked?
I scan my pages with a script and if the post-date is above 30 days, i remove the unreferenced files which are amongst them. I also remove material that does not relate to Renoise. I’m not a website provider for your family photoalbums
Can i upload bigger files?
Nopes, 512000 bytes is already a hell of a filesize, if you want to attach a larger file you’ll have to provide an external link.
I just want to upload a file with an extension that isn’t harmfull either, but you don’t allow it.
If i don’t allow it, i shall not enable it. Upload it to your private webspace and post a link to the file if you wish, but that’s as far as i can offer you the deal. And if you even abuse that deal, you won’t be doing any postings here in the future thereafter at all.
