Using MIDI Instruments

When you want to compose in Renoise, you need to use an instrument. An instrument slot can be filled with a MIDI instrument-set, a VST instrument plugin, or you can fill the sample slots attached to the instrument. You can use various simultaneous input instrument-assembly constructions by mixing up MIDI with samples or VSTi. So you are not restricted to the use of only one type of input to assemble your instrument.

We will discuss the instrument-assembly by assigning a MIDI instrument to an instrument slot.

Click on an empty instrument slot in the instrument table on the upper-right part of Renoise. Then in the lower left corner click on the Instr. Settings button:

The left-most pane, (MIDI Properties), is the one we’re dealing with in this tutorial. Select the MIDI Device you want to use:

Then select the Program you want it to reproduce the sound of, and, if nesessary, set the MIDI Channel the device is receiving the data from:

As Renoise in this case does not automatically name your instrument, we’ll do this ourselves in the same way described in the Samples tutorial. Right-click the instrument, and select the Rename instrument option in the context menu:

Then enter the new name (For instance program 5 is called E.Piano 2 in the default MIDI instrument table)

For Windows, this is practically it: nothing more to it.

For Mac it is yet not as simple.
One of our forum-users supplied us material to enable using Mac’s internal software synths as a midi device. The example given was by using SimpleSynth, a devices that allows you to take input from connected internal midi devices.

After opening Simple Synth, you need to select a MIDI Source to let it control the device.
If you have set it up properly like described earlier you can pick the IAC devices that you connected to your midi controller.

Then select the midi channel…

And assign a program to it.

In Renoise select the device in the MIDI rack of the instrument properties…

This should be working.
