Note-Off

A note-off is a key-release command being send by a MIDI device, or in Renoise also when you release a key on your keyboard during note-recording. In Renoise the noteoff command is displayed as an “Off” sign in the notecolumn of a track.

When a note-off is being sent to the note, the fade-out value of the volume envelope of the instrument will be triggered to run as well as the sustain position of any of the envelope is being released and the rest of the envelope curve is being followed until its end.

You have a Smart Note Off command (Caps-Lock), an ordinary Note Off (Shift-Caps-Lock), a Smart line note-off (Ctrl-Caps-Lock) and an ordinary line note-off (Shift-Ctrl-Caps-Lock).

Actually every note-off is just a plain note-off. But when using the smart note-off function (default) the previous noteoff before the current one in the track, is being erased, simply because two note-off signs in a column without a note in between has no use, that’s why it’s called smart note-off because it detects if there already is a previous note-off command that can then be erased.

A line note-off command is a key-combination you press on your keyboard (Ctrl-Caps-Lock or Shift-Ctrl-Caps-Lock) that set’s a note-off for each cell on that particular line in the current track you are in.

If you would like a note-cut you can also apply a cut command in either the panning-column or the volume column (Fx → x = xth tick to start cutting). This will cause the note being cut instantly without any specified release delays in the envelope of the instrument. This works for instruments containing samples, however MIDI and VSTI instruments are being sent a note-off in this case instead.

To automatically record note-cuts when recording, turn on note-delay recording ( ) on the Control Panel.
