When clicking the DSP properties button in the lower left part underneath the pattern arranger, you’ll notice the rack containing a list on the left-most side, showing links to all DSP and VST effects and the Meta devices. (Next to the list you will find the first effect-panel.).
Above it is the searchbox that gives you the opportunity to search a specific VST / DSP effect or one of the designated Renoise devices.

Effect list
By clicking on each
icon, you will expand the complete list. The expand icon will change into a collapse icon (
) once the selected effect list is expanded.
Before I start to explain different aspects of the effects, there are some common things that apply to all effects that can be dragged into the effects-rack at the bottom of Renoise.
The post mixer is always visible at the end of the chain as well as the pre mixer is always positioned at the base of the chain. You can’t drag these two on any other position than those. In between you can insert all remaining effects. The post mixer was implemented to be used for mastering purposes.

Post mixer
I already mentioned one of them: Dragging and dropping.
To enable certain effects
- either click and drag the effect from the left side-panel to the rack-surface and drop it there, or
- The old double-click-the-effect-in-the-list-method works as well.
- You can change the order of effects by dragging effects in between other effects.
You can also apply shortcut keys to move effects (lctrl-left or lctrl-right).
(You cannot however insert an effect before the master panel settings.)
The current effect list as was known in Renoise 1.2x has been completely scrapped from the new concept. Your actions and survey have to be done and checked upon the rack.
The other options every effect has in common are the buttons to shift the effect through the rack (exchanging with the right or left effect), remove it, and enable or disable the effect for the current track.
Effect plugin layout

- allows A/B editing, rightclick A or B to store current settings under A or B, left-click to recall A or B preset.
- Select VST preset or personal saved preset. When clicking upon the preset-name a context menu appears:
Import and Export allows you to save sharable presets if you desire to share them with other Renoise users.
Non-native effects (VST plugins) can have their own editor and extra effects.

There will be a few extra buttons:
- Expands parameters from VST plugin as slider set into the frame.
- Opens the plugin’s original editor.
- Shows various information about the plugin.
Effective use of effects
Each track has its own rack-set with effects. This can be a varied combination of DSP / VST and Meta effects. This counts for the ordinary sound-tracks as well as the send-tracks and master-track. However, using these effects in send-tracks and the master-track has, of course, a greater influence upon one or more tracks than when you configure a set of local track effects.
To use the same effect-configuration rack for more than one track, it is advisable to drag these effects into a send-track and drag a send-track meta-device into the rack of each track you want to apply this effect configuration to by setting the pointer to the send-track that contains your effect-configuration rack.
When you want to test an effect configuration, drag them into a track-rack first, copy the chain to memory, and paste it into the send-track, once you are totally satisfied with your testresults.
Copying effects and/or parameters
Copy / pasting of effect-chains are done through the DSP chain options in the context-menu of the Mixer or by using the short-cut keys lshift-lalt-c and lshift-lalt-v.
Each effect’s parameter settings can be copied to memory, but they can only be pasted into an identical effect-panel in the original track or rack-configuration of another track.

External effect control, Midi / effect-command
Each effect parameter slider can be attached to a midi-device controller.
Another option you can perform with every effect arround is to send it’s value as an effect-command to the effect-column in the current selected track. Just click with your right mousebutton on the slider, and you will notice that the grey dot-icon to the right of the slider changes into a green icon and you will also notice that the effect-cell in the current track of current row where your cursor is, contains the value that represents the current value of the slider, the parameternumber pointed to the slider and the effect-number in the effect-rack of this track.
Read more about this in the X Yzz construction.

If you right-click the green icon to the right of the parameter-slider, you get a context-menu:
The delete options are:
The open envelope-editor option will jump to the track-automation panel.
